BRACHIOPLASTY (ARM LIFT)

Brachioplasty, or arm lift, is a cosmetic procedure that reduces excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow, reshaping the arm resulting in smoother skin and contours. In order to achieve the desired improvements, there will be a scar on the inside of the upper arm.

A brachioplasty procedure is performed under a general anesthesia and takes about 2 hours. Incisions are placed on the inside of the arm and may extend from the underarm (axilla) to just above the elbow. The length and location of the incision may vary depending on individual patient's anatomy. The underlying tissue is reshaped and the excess skin and fat removed resulting in a more proportionate and smoother arm. Patients may be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks following surgery to minimize swelling. Incisional scars are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time. When arm lift surgery is complete, bruising and swelling will resolve over 3-4 weeks and arm shape and contour will improve over 3 months. The scars will take a full year to blend and fade. You should plan on taking one to two weeks off from work to recover and avoid any strenuous lifting or exercise for about four weeks following a brachioplasty.
